History
The history of Klein Constantia Estate dates back to the late 17th century, when wine production first began in the Constantia Valley of South Africa. The estate was established in 1685, and was soon recognized as producing some of the world's finest dessert wines.
One of the most famous wines produced by Klein Constantia is Vin de Constance. This sweet wine gained international fame in the 18th century, when it was a favorite of European royalty and literary figures such as Jane Austen and Charles Dickens. The wine's popularity continued into the 19th century, but production ceased in the early 1900s due to economic and political difficulties in South Africa.
The estate was revived in the 1980s, and in 1986, the first vintage of Vin de Constance in over 70 years was produced. The wine was an immediate success, and has since won numerous awards and accolades for its quality and unique character.
Today, Klein Constantia Estate is recognized as one of South Africa's premier wine producers. The estate's vineyards cover over 120 hectares, and are planted with a variety of grapes including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon, in addition to the Muscat grapes used to produce Vin de Constance.
In addition to its world-class wines, Klein Constantia Estate is also known for its beautiful setting, which offers stunning views of Table Mountain and the surrounding hills. The estate's historic buildings and gardens provide a glimpse into South Africa's past, while its modern facilities and commitment to sustainability ensure that it will continue to thrive for generations to come.
